Providing emolliency with oily vehicles

By their intrinsic lipid nature, oily vehicles bring emollient properties to topical dosage forms and contribute to soothing and hydration of the skin. Emollients improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin and the ‘feel’ of the skin by filling the spaces between corneocytes, providing softness and plasticity and lubricity to the skin. Esters constitute of major class of emollients, with properties linked to the fatty acid chain length, unsaturation of the chain and repartition in mono-, di- and tri-esters.
